When we consider what lightning is it becomes easier to determine the potential for causing horrific damage. Lightning is the physical discharge of enormous amounts of static electricity that have been built up in bi-polarised storm clouds. The power within bolts of lightning can exceed hundreds of thousands of amps and possess phenomenal temperatures of tens of thousands of degrees centigrade. Lightning also expels an electro-magnetic pulse which has the capacity to permanently disable equipment with electrical components.
