The Challenge of Innovation

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

My role has changed quite a lot over the years. Whereas once I was directly responsible for a vast array of project deliverables, whether it be an electrical earthing system design, delivering training, or personally undertaking investigations into stray current, circulating currents, or lightning protection system failures these days I am more likely to be introducing people to the company. Steve Hutchinson, our Group CEO, and I are often out and about learning about the needs of our customers, how they work and what challenges they face; by doing this we have been able to communicate those needs back to our JMI technical team, and to our FM Sudafix product team, from this point our staff can then service the customers a lot better.

Through our proactive and customer focused approach we constantly find new ways to operate, and also fresh challenges to overcome; each and every time the company gets wiser, more effective and this improves customer experience. Electric safety systems, whether they are lightning protection systems, stray current control systems, coordinated surge protection systems, electrical earthing / grounding systems, equipotential bonding / equipotential coupling arrangements, or other related systems can appear very confusing, and because the threat to be controlled is electricity it is incredibly important that effective safety is achieved.

Electrical, electronic, and micro-electronic items and systems are everywhere, and the amount is increasing all the time. As a consequence of these sorts of development we often find that our customers and clients are helping us break new ground in electrical safety and we are proud to support them. Over the past few years we have helped develop sector changing electrical earthing systems in the telecommunications sector that have seen changes in approach and methodology that has seen installations in North America, Europe and I believe the next deployment will be in the Far East. We have helped get key infrastructure facilities back to safety after aggressive corrosion, and protected it from any future deterioration. We have developed sector changing electrical safety systems such as key equipment earthing systems, stray current management systems and equipotential bonding systems for light and heavy rail systems that is changing European rail safety. And when it comes to creating long lasting solutions that are protected from thieves and corrosion to extend their service life in the power and petrochemical sector I do not think that any other organisation comes close to our achievements.

The key aspect here is innovation. Our customers are presenting us with new challenges because they are innovators, and we love it, because these challenges are forcing us to innovate and improve, and what could possibly be more satisfying? I must admit it can be a bit frustrating when you discover or develop a new solution that will save time, money and lives, and you realise that it has transferable opportunities in other sectors but find a lot of closed doors. This is the scary part of being an innovator for some people, by the very definition you have to be doing something completely different to what you have done before, or to what the rest of your industry is doing. The underlying question in the back of people’s minds, I’m sure, is frequently “I don’t want to be the first to try something new,” and whilst it may be reasonable to think of things this way, at the same time you cannot help but think that they almost do not deserve the chance to improve things. There is a phrase we often cite in top level management meetings at FM Sudafix and that is the “dare to be great moment” and the innovation aspect of our work relies on finding like minded people. Essentially here you are talking about the character of the marketplace; if people see innovation as nothing but risks then they are unlikely to ever take hold of the opportunity to improve, however we have been very fortunate to encounter and work with people who have genuine problems and sincerely want to overcome them, those are the people we like to work with.

On a number of our innovation projects we have had to undertake demonstrations or have our solutions tested. We have never had a problem or complaint with this, because if we put our name to a solution or method we know that it will work, so we have never been afraid of being judged on the merits of our performance: simply put, we succeed. Overcoming a legacy mindset, that familiarity of doing something one way, or purchasing a particular product, or from a specific company, can be challenging, but all we are offering is solutions or improved ways of working and if people want to benefit from that they have to take the step of working with us.

We pride ourselves on improving every day, and that means our customers are constantly enjoying the benefits of a focused company that makes their lives easier.

Ongoing Rail Works

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Creating effective earthing systems, stray current management, or equipotential bonding / coupling systems on light or heavy rail systems is incredibly challenging due to the way that the projects are constructed, but JMI always finds an effective way to achieve safety and surpass the build specification. With the ability to specify, consult, design, install, test, commission and maintain JMI (The technical division of the FM Sudafix Group) is the nominated electrical safety partner for numerous rail infrastructure projects all over the world for a very good reason. That ability to be able to offer a turnkey service in a number of performance critical areas is incredibly valuable due to the time and cost savings that it offers.

FM Sudafix Group Managing Director, Calum Heath, commented to the webteam, “Recently we have been working extensively on a light rail project in the UK, and we have been getting great results. On a number of works on that project the client originally decided to place the order for installation works with another company; whilst we were disappointed, we respected their right to place the order with whomever they wished. Some time after the other company had finished their installation we were called to site and requested to urgently redo their entire works as they had failed in terms of performance and quality. Whatever their reasons the client knows that in future they will get the right service and performance first time.”

The JMI technical team offers a range of expert services to take the worries out of electrical safety on rail sites. With decades of engineering experience working on some of the most prestigious light and heavy rail projects in the world, the team is aware of the best practices and cutting edge innovations in creating effective earthing and bonding solutions in the demanding conditions of railway sites.

Oftentimes installing vertical electrodes is impractical and horizontal earthing systems may fall to thieves, but fortunately the JMI technical team has developed a range of solutions to overcome these threats. A number of bodies in Europe and the Middle East are subscribing to the usage of Conducrete to achieve copperless or reduced copper earthing systems. These sorts of systems overcome the challenges of signalling earthing, exchanges, and structure earthing, as well as providing every protection against thieves and vandals.

Our performance track record speaks for itself and it is little wonder why companies contact the FM Sudafix Group for all their rail electrical safety needs, whether they be consultancy, design or install services, or our excellent range of rail products, which include a full range of rail specification cable for all types of project application, rail drills and their consumables, rail contact kits, rail bonds, cable lugs and heat shrink sleeving, as well as the celebrated Conducrete conductive concrete earthing solutions product.

European Consultants Use JMI Expertise

Friday, April 15th, 2011

The JMI brand has long been associated with electrical safety, and whenever it appears in the title block of technical drawings it assures that the earthing / grounding, lightning protection, surge protection, or stray current management system has been professionally designed and developed and will provide an effective value engineered solution to the project’s needs. Whilst it is not surprising that an ever increasing number of companies seek out JMI’s technical services it is certainly always satisfying for the team to establish a new business relationship.

March saw a number of European based building consultants commence new commercial arrangements with the FM Sudafix Group, sourcing the company to undertake their lightning protection designs, and earthing / grounding systems. The projects that they submitted to JMI included structures due to be built within Europe, to Africa, and the Middle and Far East.

FM Sudafix Group General Manager Calum Heath said, “JMI continues to represent quality, effectiveness and reliability and that’s why people keep knocking on our door, which is tremendously satisfying. The FM Sudafix Group, and specifically JMI, is rapidly becoming recognised as the company to contact when the project is particularly demanding. Seemingly the most challenging projects find their way to us, almost like the projects that are too important to take a risk on system designer, or perhaps that represent such a difficult profile that most others cannot even attempt.

“We seem to attract a lot of the niche jobs, the projects that are a bit different or may require a bit of lateral thinking. Most companies like projects where they get to think inside the box, they know how to cope with them, and that’s fine, but when it comes to us we will quite happily take those which challenge us.

“Being able to take customer’s problems and turn them in to value engineered solutions is something that defines us, and when those problems have already proved too much for other companies just makes it more satisfying.”

The evolution of JMI Earthing Services

Friday, March 25th, 2011

JMI Earthing Services has been providing the technical safety net for numerous companies projects the world over for some years now, but as with all things at the FM Sudafix Group, its development is by no means complete. As the ability of JMI to provide professional, effective, value engineered solutions for construction disciplines such as specialist earthing / grounding, coordinated surge protection systems, stray current management, cathodic protection systems and rail earthing / grounding elements is a core reason for customers returning to the FM Sudafix Group it was imperative that the resources behind the organisation were commensurate with the level of demand.

This week FM Sudafix Group Chief Executive Steve Hutchinson joined with JMI Earthing Technical Director John Maher and FM Sudafix Group General Manager to outline the future of JMI. Steve Hutchinson stated: “I have long regarded JMI as the jewel in the crown of FM Sudafix, and I find it very exciting to see this well respected brand continue to advance. Its services are sought by so many, so frequently, for a good reason and that is one of the many special factors that JMI continues to have such an enduring relevance in this sector.”

Focusing on the customer experience, the top management have identified new methods to enhance the JMI team including extra human resource, new process management techniques, and new technology. John Maher, the man who established JMI, proudly commented, “In honesty I never really expected that the company would ever command such a dominant position in our market segments of operation. Essentially we just wanted to offer a great service to our customers and in truth so much of the ongoing successes are really based upon the support of our customers. With the new enhancements I am quite confident that JMI will be making a real difference.”

FM Sudafix Group General Manager Calum Heath, who originally joined the FM Sudafix Group as part of the JMI technical team, was confident about the future of the organisation, “JMI means something, whether it is for our clients who have problems with substation earthing / grounding systems or whether it is our valued partners in light rail with whom we help with tram earthing or bonding / coupling or to help them effectively manage stray current. I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure that JMI continues to operate at the high standards it has come to represent and by embracing these new approaches we will be pushing JMI to the next level; Steve, John and I couldn’t be happier.”

Copper cable theft on UK railways

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Railways have always attracted the attention of criminals and vandals due to the value of the various cables used in the systems, but FM Sudafix is developing solutions to reduce the need for copper in rail earthing / grounding systems. As the value of copper has sold high in recent weeks, following a three year broadly trended increase on the London Metal Exchange, the attraction of stealing copper cable is unlikely to diminish, and this coincides with FM Sudafix Group’s technical team working to reduce the reliance of rail systems on copper items in their earthing arrangements. Police and internal security forces all over the world have to face the problem of copper theft, and this is no exception in the UK, where the FM Sudafix Group operates on a number of systems providing effective design solutions and earthing / grounding materials, including cable.

The British Transport Police have been taking significant steps in pursuing copper thieves and bringing them to justice, which is well documented by the BBC in instances such as: here where a unit from the force undertakes a raid at a suspected copper thief’s home. With copper thefts costing rail systems a rumoured £770m a year, it is reported that the only higher priority for the British Transport Police is terrorism and as such it is evident that their noted efforts are only likely to increase.

It is not only rail systems that fall victim to vandals and thieves who seek copper, as everything from telecommunications sites to power infrastructure and utilities are likely to incorporate some form of copper in its electrical safety provision. As such the FM Sudafix Group is committed to ensuring it remains an effective part of the supply chain to provide earthing / grounding system products, specialist rail and power cables, amongst other products, in the shortest possible lead in time. Whilst the FM Sudafix Group prides itself on its responsiveness, where it really excels is in the proactive development of electrical safety systems which protect copper elements, or remove the need for them entirely. Our technical team will be happy to help so if copper theft and vandalism is a concern then please get in touch.

Gambia Trip for Gamtel training

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The FM Sudafix Group is enormously proud to announce the recent training initiative that they have delivered to Gamtel (Gambia telecommunications) through the JMI training division. The training lectures and workshops were led by the FM Sudafix Technical Director John Maher and supported by other members of the JMI training team. The course covered numerous modules, such as lightning theory and applying its standards, earthing principals for telecommunication sites, and protecting against the threat of electrical surges. Shortly after arriving back in the UK, before setting off on his next trip John Maher stated: “As soon as I heard about the training due to occur with Gamtel I knew that I had to clear my schedule and attend. The African continent has been under resourced in terms of technical expertise for far too long and I was committed to playing my part in changing that. When we held our first meetings with Gamtel senior management it swiftly became apparent that other European companies had failed them in the past and I was determined to rectify that. Watching the Gamtel team embrace the latest techniques and establishing the considerable difference they could make to the Gambia was both humbling and inspiring. It is a true testament to Abdoulie Bass and the Gamtel management that they are prepared to invest in development of their staff and facilities and by doing so invest in the future of the Gambia. This course has been one of our best and it is clear it will make a difference to the Gambia, and in turn making that difference and witnessing Gamtel’s commitment to update, upgrade and improve for their people is a great privilege that has certainly made a difference in me.”

Gamtel was represented at the training by the following delegates: Abdoulie Bass, Alieu Sanneh, Dodou Njie, Edrisa Jobe, Lamin Chorr, Abdoulie Bojang, Baboucarr Secka, Edrisa Bahoum, Kemo Bojang, and Lamin Kolly.

Below are a sample of the images from the trip to Gambia. You can also view the FM Sudafix Flickr Gallery which has the images from the trip as well.
