New General Manager

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Calum & SteveThe FM Sudafix Group is enormously proud to announce that Calum Heath has now been appointed as the new General Manager. Heath, previously the FM Sudafix Integrated Systems Manager, has demonstrated his paramount value during his time with the company and CEO Steve Hutchinson said, “I had absolutely no hesitation in promoting Calum to General Manager.

He applied for the post, and whilst the board and I were sure we had our man right away based upon his performance and clear abilities, we had to make sure that the process was open and honest.”After outlining his range of commercial and operational innovations and demonstrating his determination to upgrade technical processes, whilst freeing up resource to the communications department the board were certain that despite a number of incredibly strong and promising candidates, there was no better person to take the reins than Calum Heath.

The appointment of a new General Manager coincides with an amount of restructuring within the FM Sudafix Group, which should see the company improve processes across the board, which augurs well for customers and staff alike.

At only approaching 28 the new General Manager is certainly young, but FM Sudafix has always demonstrated that it is a progressive and forward thinking company that is not afraid to trust talent when it is clearly evident, irrespective of any other criteria. John Maher, FM Sudafix Technical Director commented, “Calum has worked quite closely with me since he started here, and reviewing the restructuring plan it appears that we will continue to work together frequently, which I’m really happy about. Being a direct and energetic personality will certainly stand Calum in good stead, but in truth I’m just delighted that he is finally getting the opportunity that I’ve always believed he fully deserved.”

Calum Heath outlined his vision for the development of FM Sudafix: “Working here is not just a job for me, or indeed for so many of the guys at the top, it’s a passion, almost a calling and I am delighted to take the reins as General Manager. The fact that the experienced business people who sit on the board, particularly Steve and John, have this level of confidence in me is simultaneously humbling and encouraging. I have big plans, and they run in accord with the ultimate ambitions of the board and I am sure, the staff; together we will achieve great things and I am eager to get stuck in and start moving us towards fulfilling those ambitions.”

We look forward to watching, and being part, of Calum Heath’s achievements, and those of the wider FM Sudafix Group.

Michael Buble On Ice with the Nottingham Panthers

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

The GMB Panthers, sponsored by FM Sudafix, were joined on the ice by an incredibly special guest recently. International singing star Michael Bublé dropped in to wear the club colours and skate with the team before his sell-out concert. After meeting the players he was full of praise for the team and during the concert even had them singing along to one of his songs. The visit to the Panthers is expected to be featured on a television documentary which we’re told is likely to go worldwide and be released on DVD in the near future.

FM Sudafix Group Strategy and Communications Director, Sean Elliott-Maher spoke about Michael Bublé grabbing some ice time with the Panthers, “I have to admit that when we made the sponsorship deal with the Panthers I had no idea how satisfying it would be to see the players take to the ice wearing the company logo, but I never imagined a platinum selling recording artist would be wearing it at some point too! In truth Michael Bublé clearly has excellent taste, choosing to pull on the shirt of the best team in the league, and his interview on Panthers radio made it clear how much respect and admiration this huge star has for the Panthers players.”

Whilst we do not expect to see Michael Bublé wearing a Panthers shirt in a face off against the Sheffield Steelers any time soon, we can all hope that one day he’ll lace up his skates with the Panthers again.

FM Sudafix Attend Q&A Session with Prime Minster in Nottingham

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

FM Sudafix Group CEO Steve Hutchinson, Technical Director John Maher, and Strategy and Communications Director Sean Elliott-Maher were all invited to attend a private Question and Answer session with Prime Minister David Cameron, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in Nottingham.

The event took place only 24 hours after the coalition government had announced the outcomes of their spending review, which had left vast swathes of the population concerned about the impact that cut-backs may have. Also attending the event was MP Anna Soubry, who represents the constituency where the FM Sudafix Group’s new branch has opened, and the FM Sudafix representatives were seen speaking with her about the Eastwood site before the event commenced.

The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister were forced to defend a number of their decisions in the spending review and also to identify where various points may have been distorted by the opposition or by media portrayals. Prime Minister David Cameron, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, mentioned that the proposed extensions to the Nottingham tram had survived the spending review. The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister also mentioned their support of prospective enhancements to the local rail infrastructure, which would see the city move nearer to the high speed rail link that has been requested by the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce for some time, for which FM Sudafix’s John Maher was interviewed on television by the BBC where he stated his full support for the scheme.

Steve Hutchinson commented: “I was pleased to be invited and to get to listen to the ethos underpinning the spending review from the very people responsible for the running of the country. The impacts of the changes could be dramatic, but seeing the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in person was reassuring from both a business point of view, and as a citizen and I suppose ultimately as a voter. They had to face some seriously challenging questions from other attendees but they answered all of them. One concern appears to be that the commitments to save front-line services across the board may not be being actioned satisfactorily by local government branches, and I think they have to be very careful to monitor that.”

Picking up where Hutchinson left off John Maher stated: “Steve and I will be relating the words of Prime Minister Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Clegg to the board, and then I believe we have an assembly scheduled for tomorrow to discuss this with the rest of the team. It was interesting to see the dynamic of these two leaders in person, and certainly in terms of these two gentlemen, the coalition seems to be strong. Whether the decisions made in the spending review will be popular is a totally separate issue from how necessary they may be. If the calculation of Britain having to repay £120m a day to other governments purely in interest is correct it is an horrific state of affairs and clearly grasping the nettle is the only option to start to retain more money in the national purse. £120m is the cost of a school, as I believe Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg stated, or a hospital wing, and clearly that’s money that the country needs to invest domestically.” It is clear that FM Sudafix top management are looking to the future and determining the best way to sustain both growth and success in a way that will still support the communities from where its success is generated.

FM Sudafix match sponsorship ends with Panthers domination

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

CEO Steve Hutchinson Presents the Panthers Man of the MatchAs part of our support of the Nottingham Panthers FM Sudafix are sponsoring a number of matches throughout the season, and what a way to start.
The GMB Nottingham Panthers put a recently enhanced squad on the ice against CCS Dundee Stars. Whilst Angel Nikolov had already played earlier in the week against the Braehead Clan, demonstrating why the Panthers wanted to bring him to Nottingham with every touch of the puck, new forward Rob Bellamy had barely had chance to put down his suitcase before lacing up his skates! As Bellamy only arrived in the UK in the middle of the afternoon on the 15th he had no real chance to grab ice time before facing the CCS Dundee Stars on Saturday evening.

The lively home crowd at the Trent FM Arena were delighted to finally see their new signing. Rob Bellamy made a huge contribution to a night which saw the GMB Nottingham Panthers win by one of the largest margins in recent memory, rounding off the night with a Man of the Match award, presented by FM Sudafix Group CEO Steve Hutchinson.

The excitement on the ice was reflected by the exuberance in the FM Sudafix box, where company executives enjoyed the match with colleagues, clients and partners, which gave the entire event a familial atmosphere. “The Arena was absolutely electric and all the people in the box were in raptures at the Panthers’ performance,” said company Technical Director John Maher.

Calum Heath, newly appointed as General Manager of the FM Sudafix Group, commented “The game was tense whenever the puck was behind our defensive line, and I think that shows in some of the pictures; whilst we never needed to worry because the Panthers were simply brilliant on the night, it’s never nice to concede a goal is it? Looking at the way John reacted to all of the action on the ice you can see that he wears his heart on his sleeve, and that he lives and dies with the Panthers. Every time that John got up to dance was a special moment in and of itself.”

In light of this being the first sponsored match of the 2010-11 season Steve Hutchinson stated, “What a wonderful night! With a stunning effort from the boys on the ice and the great spirit in the box I think it’s safe to say that this was a really special moment this year.”

Sean Elliott-Maher, who acts as interface between the FM Sudafix Group and the GMB Nottingham Panthers said, “We didn’t hesitate in giving Rob Bellamy the Man of the Match award; members of the FM Sudafix team know what it’s like to step off a long flight and get straight to work. In truth the whole Panthers team deserved recognition because they were a different class, and Clarke deserves a special mention for that hat-trick. That being said, and it must be said, the best moment of the night wasn’t the score line, it was when Paws decided to join us in the box; you don’t get to be the best mascot in the league without a special talent, and Paws has it all! We are so proud of the Panthers and can’t wait until the next sponsored match where we can demonstrate our commitment to the team.”

Lady Liberty Leads the Way in Lightning Protection

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Statue of Liberty Lightning StrikeThe Statue of Liberty has long represented the manifest hopes and ambitions of the United States of America, but now it is possible to see how this iconic structure demonstrates core principles of lightning protection.

The photographs recently published showing lightning striking Liberty Island caught the attention and captivated the imagination of millions of people around the world. The images were certainly dramatic, effectively conveying the incredible power the single lightning bolts can possess. However, after a direct hit the Statue of Liberty survived unscathed. Part of the reason that Lady Liberty continues to stand is that the structure is ostensibly made from copper, which is a commonly used material in lightning protection and earthing materials.

The Statue of Liberty is an example of what electrical safety engineers refer to as a ‘natural conductor’ which is to convey the notion that an element conducts electricity without the need for further components. In essence if we think of a brick and mortar structure it will not conduct electricity on its own so if lightning strikes it there is no natural route for the electrical charge to follow, so it will seek one, often causing massive structural damage in the process and frequently causing fires. However, a steel framed structure will be able to conduct electricity, providing that it is adequately bonded and prepared with conducting electricity in mind; the steel frame of the structure is therefore regarded as a natural element that can be incorporated into a lightning protection system.

That being said, the mere presence of natural conductor does not guarantee protection. In fact if a natural conductor is not properly incorporated into a lightning protection or electrical safety system it may actually become a hazard. The reason for this is that if conductive materials offer an alternative path to an installed lightning protection system there is a possibility that lightning may induct into those materials instead; this event is called ‘flash over’. The prospect of flash over is addressed in the lightning protection standard BS EN 62305:2006, which calls for all extraneous metalwork to be cross-bonded into a lightning protection system.

Lightning current, or indeed any other source of electrical current, becomes more likely to induct into other conductive elements if they possess a lower electrical resistance. Resistance is that property of a material which opposes the flow of electrical current, therefore the lower the electrical resistance; the easier it is for electricity to flow. Consequently it useful to think that electricity is always seeking the easiest path to flow and if it has sufficient charge it may have the power to ionise air molecules to travel to the easiest path.

To return to those wonderful photographs of the Statue of Liberty, we really have to applaud the incredible tenacity of the photographer who apparently spent 40 years waiting for that photo. Considering that lightning is not a daily weather even in New York, and that any single bolt of lightning only lasts fractions of a second it is really a tremendous achievement to capture such an image.

If you have taken a great photograph of lightning then we would love to see it so please get in touch.
